Adriano Adewale: Raizes

By Mike Hobart

Shades of African-inflected jazz are delivered with watery sounds accompanied by the gentle throb of an Ngoma drum
The opening sloosh of water accompanied by the gentle throb of an Ngoma drum imposes a graphic sense of place that is sustained throughout this lovely CD. Both were produced by Brazilian percussionist Adriano Adewale – the watery sounds are made by a gourd; later there’s wind and birdsong.
But this is a group effort, with Adewale and his multi-instrumental London-based quartet delivering delicate shades of rootsy, African-inflected jazz. All are multi-instrumentalists, with lilting rhythm and the sounds of flute, kora and double bass dominant.
